Stallings on road slide: 'We're our problem'

OXFORD, Miss. Kevin Stallings wouldn't go so far as to say, "We have met the enemy and he is us."

But as the Vanderbilt coach and his Commodores hit the road for the fourth time in five Southeastern Conference games, it's clear that tonight's opponent is a secondary issue.

Meet the more gentle Jack Morris

Baseball fans got a chance to see the kinder, gentler side of hard-nosed World Series MVP Jack Morris on Tuesday night when he spoke at the Canaries Hot Stove Banquet at the Sioux Falls Convention Center.

The 18-year major league pitching veteran and three-time World Series champion related a moving story about his third-grade teacher, who let the kids watch the Twins play in a 1965 World Series game during school hours.

After that game, Morris told her that one day he too was going to play for the Twins in a World Series.

"She patted me on the back and told me to hold on to my dreams," he said.

When Morris actually accomplished the task and had retired, he looked up his former teacher, took her out to lunch, and told her how much she had inspired him.
