| Up against boundaries, together and alone
Yet her work has its own power and grit, indeed more grit than Freed's; his paintings are marked more by formal elegance. The exhibit starts with figure drawings Orlowsky and Freed executed in one of Hofmann's classes in 1937. In "Rediscovering William Freed," a catalog for a 2003 show at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum and the Cape Cod Museum of Art, Myrna Harrison recounts a story Freed told about his first lesson with Hofmann. Freed drew an academically precise nude. The Cubist teacher made a disparaging comment, then offered detailed criticism. Freed was hooked. Of the two nude charcoal drawings, Freed's is closer to representational; he sketched out volumes of shoulder and thigh. The long neck suggests the axle around which the rest of the body twists.
Doctors slam 'Rambo' for drug comments
The star of "Rambo" admits his bronze-sculpture physique isn't exactly natural. Fueling the controversy, Sylvester Stallone also encouraged the use of human growth hormones and testosterone. His splashy comments and rippling muscles have spawned criticism from physicians who call his statements reckless. "It's appalling for someone that kids look up to to come out and say something like that," said Dr. Edward Snell, director of primary sports medicine at Allegheny General Hospital. Mr. Stallone's statements don't "come from a knowledgeable place," he said. Dr. Johnny Benjamin, chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach, Fla., also had a slam for Rambo. "Everyone is so concerned about baseball stars and the alleged use of these substances," he said.
Reshaped Braves aim toward spring training
Plus, they have some flexibility and perhaps even some attractive bargaining chips to make moves in July if needed. I'm actually beginning to hope the writers' strike lasts until Spring Training so that I can catch some games… This is going to be one entertaining year with a team that's a genuine pleasure to root for.
