| How to win a war of words
What does each candidate need to do to win? To pick up some tips, The Times talked to Hollihan and another political communication expert, Craig Smith, a Cal State Long Beach professor and Republican political consultant.
This is some of their advice:
For Clinton
Dress to convey authority: "She's been coming in with a scarf around her neck; she's been wearing pearls. That's all nice, but it doesn't convey the kind of authority that a suit does for a woman," Smith said.
Don't get mean: In the Democrats' South Carolina debate, "when she made the comment about him working for a slumlord, it really came off as mean-spirited," Smith said. "It's something a man can get away with easier than a woman can. That's unfair, but that's the way things are.
How Do You Learn a Dead Language?
Last week, Chief Marie Smith Jones, the only remaining native speaker of the Eyak language, died in her home in Anchorage, Alaska. Chief Jones' death makes Eyak—part of the Athabascan family of languages—the first known native Alaskan tongue to go extinct. Linguists fear that 19 more will soon follow the same fate. Fortunately, starting in 1961, Chief Jones and five other native-speaking Eyaks worked with Michael Krauss, a linguist at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks, to document Eyak in case future generations want to revive it. How would you go about learning a language that nobody speaks? It depends. A well-documented language would have a dictionary, grammar book, a body of literature (such as folk tales or religious texts), and, in some cases, videos and recordings that a dedicated student could learn from.
Murder Witnesses Could Be Behind Bars Longer
Alleged witnesses to a Siouxland murder may be staying behind bars longer. The Woodbury County Attorney's Office says it's filed a motion to keep Ray Dukes and Nicholas Perez in jail longer. The two Sioux City men are being held in connection with the murder of Zachary Cooper, 23 of Sioux City. His body was discovered on a rural Lawton, Iowa road earlier this month. A hearing is set to deal with Dukes and Perez in late February. Meanwhile, the two men charged with Cooper's murder, Jeremy Williams and Samuel Wright, say they're innocent. Both Williams and Wright are set to stand trial in April. .
