Out, Out Brief Candle

A T 10:15 P.M. ON Monday September 5, 150 of Egypt's top actors, critics, and theater critics were watching the final scene of El-Fayoum Theater Group's play Mann Minna? (Who Among Us?). The play was being performed inside an art gallery at the Beni Sueif Cultural Palace; it was the last day of the 15th Theater Club Festival, and everybody was looking forward to the show, as the performing group was famed for winning theater competitions across the country.

Originally intended to accommodate a maximum of 70 persons, the room was packed. All around, the walls of the small room were transformed into a part of the set, using pieces of burlap sacks spray-painted with silver and black, morphing the gallery into a cave-like space. Candles, the primary source of illumination, lined the walls.

Richardson's final day mixes media and chance meeting

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson got a jump start on Iowa Caucus day, leaving his hotel in downtown Des Moines at 5:15 a.m. He wore a navy blue blazer with an American flag lapel pin and khaki trousers.

He and his aides headed to the Waveland Cafe, a popular west side eatery. John Roberts of CNN cable news was inside, and they talked about the Democratic battle for the presidential nomination.

After Richardson wrapped up the interview, he ran into former Sen. Fred Thompson, a Tennessee Republican presidential candidate. They wished each other luck, and Richardson stayed for scrambled eggs, bacon and toast. In between bites, he took a few political questions from customers.

Next, Richardson drove to Java Joes Coffeehouse downtown for a chat with Joe Scarborough, host of MSNBCs Morning Joe program.
