I see a reform movement that has stalled in its tracks. While there are women today working tirelessly to further the cause of female equality, there are too few of us talking publicly about this issue. In the United States, some women are thriving. Maybe that accounts for our complacency. The spirit of supporting each other emotionally, and helping each other advance professionally that took root in the 1970s, seems greatly diminished, while the consequences of sexism remain. Is it really OK that women today earn, on average, 77 cents on the $1 compared to men, and that after working at a job for 10 years, the gap widens? Is it really OK that 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime and that 1 in 10 women age 65 or older live at or below the poverty level - nearly twice the rate of men of the same age? Having been the victim of a drunken driver incident, I feel any kind of warning for others would be a welcome notice. Yes it would be an embarassment to the offender, but that is far less destructive or costly than a death or incident that they can cause simply because they chose to make the wrong decision and drive while impaired.
